SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE

As 2018 comes to a close, I'd like to thank the Pine Hollow family for another great year!  I'm proud of our product and the Green Department team this season which performed with great success even when faced with challenging weather conditions.  Our team is grateful for the opportunity to continue and build relationships with you in 2019 and we're excited to enhance your membership experience.  Lastly, we will continue our goal of exceeding your expectations on a daily basis as our golf course is set to have another great year in 2019!

At this time, with the extended forecast we will be moving pins to Temporary Greens on 1/2/19 and at that point golf cart play will not be permitted.  The days ahead will lead to reflecting on this season's events, making the necessary changes to our programs, and starting another productive off-season.

Thank you again for the opportunity to do what I love and best wishes in the New Year!
Yours for Better Turf,

Brent Peveich
Golf Course Superintendent

2018 YEAR IN REVIEW

  • Season of extremes pushed our staff, turf, and programs to the test. 2018 provided a cold slow start, record heat, extended humidity, and three times the normal rainfall. Our team successfully navigated a season that could have easily been reflected by significant turf loss.
  • The aggressive aeration schedule implemented in the fall of 2014 proved its importance by providing firmer and faster conditions thru a challenging year while also providing our turf stand with an adequate growing medium.
  • 30+in. of rain from July to October lead to a number of closures for carts, traffic issues with turf, and inconsistencies in playing conditions. These events exposed weak grass in traffic areas, the need for more drainage, and continued contamination of subsurface stones in our bunkers.
  • Staff Update – 2nd year Assistant Dane Poth moved on to Estate management.  1st year Assistant Garrett Matthews will be returning in March of 2019 after finishing his degree at Rutgers University. And Assistant Mike DeGreco hired in October will be rejoining us in March of 2019 once he is cleared from shoulder surgery. All Union staff members are expected to return 3/19.
  • Union Contract will expire at the end of 2019. Planning and meetings need to be addressed before the expiration date. I am hopeful for a quick turnaround to continue maintaining the positive work environment within the Green Department.
  • Successful project work in 2019 – Chip Green Bunker/Extension, Driving Range Mat, Driving Range Fence Replacement, Driving Range Netting,  Cart Path Work at #1 to #10, Tree Work.

WORK DETAIL 2019
  • Pump House work will begin in mid-January to pull and replace 40+year old system. Entire scope of work will not be known until pump and shaft is pulled.
  • Aggressive 2019 Aeration scheduled to continue progressive maintenance practices.
  • Winter soil amendments and plant protectant products applied.
  • The chipping green bunker, addition next to #10 fairway, disturbance area is open and work will continue as time and weather permits (IN-HOUSE).
  • Irrigation repairs, system adjustments and winterization are currently taking place.
  • Property Cleanup; leaves, plant material pruning, snow removal, parking areas, etc.
  • Tree Maintenance Plan implementation and specimen beautification.
  • Equipment Maintenance for 2019 – performed by PHCC’s full-time mechanic.
  • Continued education to stay current with today’s agronomic issues and club business.
  • New system of work management to be implemented to track daily work with addition of software and digital job board.
  • 2019 Budgeting/Ordering/Planning/Staffing.

PROPERTY IMPROVEMENTS
HOLE #1
Continue work started in 2018 with improving tree lines thru take downs and pruning. Add additional drainage and drywells to divert water and hold runoff.  Eventually #1 green should be rebuilt towards the front green side bunker to improve playability. Continue adding material to landscape left of tee.
HOLE #2
Replant back berm against 25A with seasonal shrubs and plantings for screening and to add interest. Also, clean left side scrub trees from the property line along Grace Lane. Construct new overflow for pond and elevate left side of pond edge to keep consistent water height. Similar to the first green due to increased green speeds this green has lost interesting pin locations and should be rebuilt or softened.
HOLE #3
Continue working on fairway contour lines making more sense of the hole and the lay of the land by improving fairway extension started in 2018 to landing area. This hole also has potential for a collection and expansion area over the left greenside bunker extending around the green. Aggressively take down dying cherries and scrap pines up the right side while replanting with hardwoods for our future. Cleanup and replant desirable species along left property line to screen out 25A. Also, continue to screen out the left side dump area along property line.
HOLE #4
Continue with pruning, tree removals, and aggressive replanting along both tree lines. Unfortunately these tree lines are weak with predominately ash, pine and spruce. Continue to improve fairway extension started in 2018 to the right of the approach bunker with aeration and seeding.
HOLE #5
Rebuild or relevel tees. Fairway bunker on the left is extremely penal due to a tree planted too close to the hazard and creates a double penalty.  Either the tree is removed (nice tree) or the bunker should be pinched into the right. XGD drainage in approach is needed to improve turf and playability.
HOLE #6
Clean out debris and damaged trees left of tees. Continue with select removals along the right side of the fairway. XGD drainage should be added to the approach removing excess water while also lifting sod and releveling area to pitch towards existing dry wells.
HOLE #7
Left side of fairway along service road should be replanted to screen out dumpsite. Add additional drainage to the fairway landing area and approach to help move water and improve playability.
HOLE #8
Continue with select removals along both sides of hole. Add XGD drainage to approach.
HOLE #9
Right of green still has a large collection of trees that could be thinned for better growing conditions.
HOLE #10
Remove all rhododendrons to the right of the tee and transplant. This will clean up the tee area and allow for more space for a rebuilt or re-leveled teeing ground. Aggressive tree maintenance has already begun on this hole and just the start of what should come. Unfortunately this hole was overplanted with undesirable trees and now has the weakest shot quality and aesthetic value on the course. My recommendation is to have an architect gives options for improvement.
HOLE #11
Men’s tee complexes on this hole should be shifted right and completely rebuilt giving more yardages, teeing options, and interesting angles. Large extension area off #10 Green to #17 fairway could provide us with great pitching options around greens and provide more hitting area to #11 Green.
HOLE #12
Complete tee rebuild is recommended. Joining the back tee with #14 would allow a number of yardages to be used and angle the tee shot over the ponds on #12. The cart path to the left of #11 green will be re-routed for safety and function. A new spillway to drywells should be constructed to improve drainage out of ponds while also elevating and re-leveling the fairway and rough towards the ponds for better water movement. Ponds should be re-constructed and cleaned of invasive plant material.
HOLE #13
Continue with major removals and replanting with specimen trees replacing the undesirable species. Cart path at approach will be redirected between new tees on #14 away from green. Trees to the right of #13 approach will be selectively removed without causing danger to players on #14 tee. Collection area will be extended down banks to level ground and join #14 Tee during #12/#14 Tee rebuild.
HOLE #14
Tees will be completely rebuilt and shifted over with new hidden cart path between tees and away from #13 green. This new cart path will extend away from hitting area and lead to service road eliminating the need for the unsightly left side path.
HOLE #15
Improve tees by rebuilding and re-leveling. Continue with removals, pruning, and replanting tree lines.
HOLE #16
All tees and tree lines need improvement.  More importantly though the fairway landing area needs to be stripped and re-leveled to drains with XGD drainage added to help direct surface and sub-surface water.
HOLE #17
Continue with fairway contour around left greenside bunker connecting to existing collection.
HOLE #18
Continue work on fairway contours. Re-level forward and middle tees. Continue to improve tree lines. Remove all trees back and left of green for sunlight, air movement, while improving views.

COURSE IMPROVEMENTS SUMMARY
  • Aggressive tree maintenance and replanting program necessary.
  • Continue with in-house and contracted tee rebuild and releveling.
  • Bunker contamination will continue due to liner deterioration since the last construction. My recommendation is to select worst bunkers to address first and rebuild 3 to 6 holes per year if full construction is not possible.
  • Continue removing cart paths where possible and resurfacing paths when necessary.
  •  Pump house work will begin in January to address issues with 40+ year old pump/well.

CHIPPING GREEN AND PRACTICE AREAS
  • Build an additional practice bunker at existing chipping green to continue adding different pitch options for our practice areas.
  • Build an indoor hitting bay with simulator room to service all membership throughout the season during inclement weather but also for off-season services.

CLUBHOUSE/ LANDSCAPE IMPROVEMENTS
  • Construction and re-lining of pond at front circle. Additional landscape can be planted around pond and lawn area to transform area into an Augusta like setting.
  • Opposite of pond cleanup wooded areas and plant azaleas, rhododendrons, and select holly trees to give interest all year while cleaning up what would be a great first impression.
  • **************Plan for asphalt repair work 25A to clubhouse.*********************

TENNIS & POOL AREA
  • Aggressively take down dead trees behind courts, screen off with plant material, and build construction material area to hide unwanted sand and materials from parking lot.
  • Add sport court to give all members more options for play basketball, pickle ball, hard court.

GOLF COURSE UPDATE

GREEN COMMITTEE 9/15/18
GOLF COURSE UPDATE
  • Actual mowing heights – GREENS .110, TEES/COLLARS/APPROACHES .325, FAIRWAYS .375, STEP-CUT 1”, ROUGH 2.25”.
  • 2018 Season has set records for rainfall and oppressive heat which has pushed our staff, budget and turf to the edge of sustainability. This year will be remembered among grass growers in the Northeast as the 4th hottest on record and due to solid programs we had no significant issues.
  • Fall Aeration – Scheduled and will be aggressive to improve playing conditions for next golf season and promote recovery from a relentless summer (see attached).
  • PUMPHOUSE – 100 hp. Pump and Well compromised but could still function at half its intended capacity in an emergency. We will not know the complete extent of damage until the columns are pulled 11/18 and total repair is estimated at $100,000.
  • Silvery Thread Moss eradication program for greens on going. This process has shown significant improvements on most greens with populations decreasing by 80%.
  • Bunkers have been severely impacted from extreme weather events causing failure of bunker liner, contamination, and bunker collapse. Our hazards have been maintained to the best of our ability but these issues are not going away without renovation.
  • #1 Green continues to be a topic of conversation due to green speed gains over four years.
  • Improve contours in fairways and green expansion areas with additions and subtractions. These areas are part of Hanse Golf Course Design’s original plan and fairway expansion will be discussed with all professional staff before work begins.
  • Improve and expand practice area with new bunker across road to provide more practice options. This area will join #10 fairway with the collection from #14 green.
  • Drainage installation at chipping area approach (driving range), #6 approach, #5 approach, #8 approach, #15 approach, and #16 fairway.
  • Pine Hollow Green’s Department Blog – pinehollowgreens.blogspot.com

PROPOSED CAPITAL PROJECTS
  • LONG RANGE PLAN – Discussion with Committee and Board should take place to develop a long range plan. This plan protects our interests, sets goals and provides information to set aside money.
  • PRACTICE AREA - Build a new bunker at the Chipping Green with the addition of more fairway height for longer pitch and run options from #10 fairway.
  • GOLF COURSE - Tee Complex Construction #11 and #12/#14.
  • GOLF COURSE - Cont. Tree Maintenance Plan for 2017/2018 late fall to winter: In/Out House work done with a plan to replant.
  • EQUIPMENT - Purchase Deep-Tine Aeration Unit. Purchase New Walk behind Greens mowers and new utility carts (2019). Also, repair pump house issues outlined above.
  • BUDGET- Equipment and Resources to continue to improve the Club’s biggest asset.

REMEMBER

FIX BALLMARKS BACK TO FRONT

Please remember this is your course and to be respectful of your fellow members while using carts, raking bunkers, and hitting of the mats when not on the grass range tee. Two other points of good golf etiquette are fixing ballmarks and repairing divots (see below).
FILL DIVOTS AND SMOOTH OR REPLACE DIVOT

GOLF COURSE UPDATE 7/10/18

  • Seasonal Height of Cut - GRNS .115" and double rolled every WED/FRI/SAT/SUN, TEES .325, Approaches .325, FWYS .350", All Rough(bunker edges included) 2.25" cut twice a week to give a 2.5" rough for weekend play.
  • Bunker sand detail work will continue with depth checking and additional quartzite added for firmer faces and less plugging.
  • Mower line detail around Tees (red lines) and Collars (red dots) this gives mowers guidance.
  • Tournament season greens conditioning will continue with grooming, topdressing, and aggressive rolling when weather conditions are favorable.
  • Property detail and moving along with tournament golf preparations.
  • Bi-weekly greens venting will continue, this practice is largely unnoticeable to golfers and has been performed each of the last few seasons for plant performance during summer stress.

Coming in hot as the USGA explained in the last update, we have seen a wild ride over the past few months going from cool wet conditions to extreme heat and humidity. Our team is playing defense during these periods to ensure overall turf health is not jeopardized for the season for a few days of golf. With this strategy, we still prepare for our normal tournament speeds of 12' to 12.5' on double roll days and tournaments, but back off when necessary. Part of my daily planning is to mow greens everyday, skip rolling if necessary, properly keep grass cool with syringing, or apply extra water to recuperate with hand watering. This has worked well for us in the past and this season I felt so good about our turf prior to the heat we lowered our effective HOC (height of cut) on all fine cut turf. This will help our product play faster and firmer and will stay constant unless weather or turf health is negatively impacted. Overall, our golf course handled a busy June and the brutal beginning of July nicely and we are ready for the next 4 weeks until we award the 2018 Club Champion and begin aeration.
Looking past August I will be busy quoting repairs to our pump station, exploring options for capital improvements, and planning in-house improvements for this fall. We have had a great season even with the tough start and I know everyone at Pine Hollow is ready to finish strong!

GOLF COURSE UPDATE 5/27/18

  • Seasonal Height of Cut - GRNS .110" and double rolled every WED/FRI/SAT/SUN, TEES .350, Approaches .350, FWYS .375", All Rough(bunker edges included) 2.25" cut twice a week to give a 2.5" rough for weekend play.
  • All flowers, planters, and mulching complete.
  • Bunker sand detail work will continue with depth checking and additional quartzite added for firmer faces and less plugging.
  • Mower line detail around Tees (red lines) and Collars (red dots) this gives mowers guidance.
  • New fairway extensions on #3 and #4 fairways seeded and topdressed.
  • New areas to be cut down at step cut height include the left side of #17 greenside bunker and between #14 green to #10 fairway.
  • Tournament season greens conditioning started with weekly grooming, topdressing, and aggressive rolling.
  • Property detail and moving towards maintenance mode for tournament golf.
  • Bi-weekly greens venting to begin 6/16/18 this practice is largely unnoticeable to golfers and has been performed each of the last few seasons for plant performance during summer stress.

The unofficial start of the summer is here and with it brings more inconsistency in our forecast. We have seen four Noreasters in March, a cold dry April and a wet May with temperatures fluctuating from 60's to 90's challenging our patience to play and condition the course. But finally this week welcomed more golfers to enjoy a course starting to pop with color, quicker more consistent greens, and rough with teeth to penalize players missing fairways. Over the next few weeks we will be working to wrap up any open projects and turn all our attention to maintenance and plant health leading into the summer.
Relocating Trees #3

This holiday weekend kicks off what is going to be another great golf season and my staff is excited to deliver another great golf experience for you and our guests. As always the Green Department appreciates your continued support. Thank you!

TURFHOUND INFORMATION

TurfHound we felt produced the most realistic, versatile and durable synthetic golf surface due to their patented Active Foam Technology. TurfHound surfaces most accurately simulated the feel and performance of healthy fairway turf. While most golf mats focus their attention on the hitting surface with high clubhead bounce, TurfHound replicates the physical dynamics and response of natural turf embodied in the top 1/2" of an actual playing surface. You can practice your swing again and again on a TurfHound surface, then step onto the fairway and enjoy the same swing on natural turf while reducing the risk of joint and muscle injuries due to club impact shock. A few other selling points for us were the options of the first cut surrounding the hitting area which is also great to practice off, the teeing slot for player specific tee heights, and the versatile rotating panels for extended life. We hope you enjoy the new tee line when the grass tee is closed and please remember to be respectful when the practice range is placed on the mats.

GOLF COURSE UPDATE 4/17/18

  • Spring Aeration - Greens complete 4/9/18 with 3/8" tines filled, Tees delayed, Fairways delayed.
  • Cobblestone, asphalt work, and sod wrapped up at 1st tee.
  • Bunker and fairway at chipping green finished and currently closed until 5/6/18.
  • #13 Black Tee extended and re-leveled. Currently closed until 5/6/18.
  • All bunkers were raked, depths checked, and addition of Quartzite sand made to faces for firmness.
  • Stump areas to be finished with seed or sod week of 4/16/18.
  • Detail work will continue around the property with mulching, debris clean up, and normal daily routines now that weather and temperatures should begin to average out.
  • Driving Range Tee work will begin 4/17/18 with removal, followed by concrete pad installation, and finished with Turf Hound Tee install. Turf Hound is set to start installation on 4/25/18.
  • Tennis courts have been resurfaced and will be opening as fences are repainted and new wind screens installed. Our plan is to have 3 courts fully open by 4/20/18.
Finally, the Northeast had some spring weather this past week to help welcome members back to Pine Hollow. Our staff was also finally given the opportunity for a productive week and I'm optimistic that the extended forecast will provide us with more good work weather ahead.
Over the coming weeks, we will continue playing catchup on project work and spring aeration once cleanup and desired property details are achieved. The only exception is the Driving Range Tee Project which we will begin work on this week. I'll communicate accordingly to the Pro shop on which tees are open daily once ground breaks utilizing both grass tees to minimize member inconvenience and traffic. Our plan is to have all work finished and open by the final weekend in April.
Better golf is ahead and once the season begins we will be ready! Thanks again for all your support and we will continue to keep you posted on our progress. Welcome back!

GOLF COURSE UPDATE 2/7/18

  • All project work scheduled to start this March/April once the weather allows for construction to begin.
  • All off-season preventative maintenance and cutting unit sharpening has been completed with our full-time mechanic.
  • Rough grading and machine work complete at Chipping Green Bunker construction. Finish work and sod will be laid out once crew returns.
  • Extension to #13 Black Tee started and will continue 3/18.
  • Pond excavation and cleanup work at clubhouse ongoing with water refilled 3/18.
  • Tree work will be finishing up the week of 2/10/18 for this winter and cleanup of stump areas will begin for sod or seed this spring. Areas addressed were all part of long-range tree maintenance plan and laid out as part of my handout in the year-end review.

Our friend Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and with six more weeks of winter, we'll be busy wrapping up 2017 projects before course cleanup and 2018 capital project work begins. Over the past few months, we experienced brutally cold weather in  December and January and with very little snow you will notice a straw color on all turf especially our greens. Unfortunately, we have had very little snow which helps to insulate grass from low-temperature kill and desiccating winds. Even though grass always goes off color and dormant this time of year the extreme color differences are where blowing snow was not present during the cold temperatures in January. At this point, we have grown out plugs taken from the off-color greens and know some injury has occurred. I do not believe we have any extensive winter damage as the Northeast saw a few years ago, but will continue to monitor our playing surfaces and update you if any issues in plant health occur.

Fortunately, when we have a winter with no snow that also translates into a very productive off-season for project work. Even with no staff and my Assistants taking their vacation, we've been busy taking down trees around the property detailed in our long-range tree maintenance plan. Our biggest statement is the main drive where removing undesirable and poorly growing specimens will not only improve the growing conditions of the hardwoods planted but will open up views to the club's best asset. These areas will be cleaned up in the coming weeks and prepped for sod or seed this spring giving a great visual to all our hard work.

Along with the tree maintenance, we have also been busy setting the stage for this spring's capital projects to begin in early March. The cart path work will start first and stretch from the staging area at #1 tee around the putting green to #10 tee including asphalt removal, cobblestone block installation, and seamless asphalt laid. While working this area we will also be reorganizing the plant material left of #1 tee and filling in the swale creating a new mulch planting. Our second project is set to start in early April with the turfhound.com mat and could potentially take up to a week for completion. This process will consist of removing the existing mat, pouring a new concrete pad, and the product installation. The grass tee at the lower level will be made available for membership and communicated together with Steve Donnelly as the contractor's schedules are known.

As you can see it's going to be an exciting spring for the Club and I'm hopeful our friend's shadow is as accurate as most forecast predictions. Thank you for your continued confidence and support and we will see you soon.
